Advocacy (SIL)
Scope of this chapter
We (name of company) will ensure that young people are afforded access to an ‘Independent Advocate’, who will act on their behalf if they require. Whilst the general principle of supporting young people towards independence involves encouraging greater levels of autonomy and responsibility, it is acknowledged that, many young people will still require ongoing access to independent advice and support which may necessitate the involvement of an Advocate. This is particularly the case for young people who are still subject to a care order.
All young people will be notified of the availability of an Independent Advocate to represent them at any decision-making forums throughout their placement with us; i.e. Planning or Review Meetings. In the event of a Young Person raising a formal complaint against the company, young people will be referred to an Independent Advocacy Service to ensure that their interests are being properly and independently represented throughout the process.
- Representing the young person's interests where he/she is of insufficient age and / or understanding to act in their own best interests;
- Representing the young person's best interests when they are incapable of acting in their own interests because of health impairment;
- Representing the young person's best interests regarding legal and financial matters or other relevant matters in respect of their lives;
- Acting as an independent ‘information source’ to promote the young person's best interests;
- Ensuring certain issues in the young person's life are independently addressed such as the young person's racial, cultural, religious needs and issues relating to placement satisfaction;
- Resolving problems at the lowest levels that they can;
- Supporting young people at Reviews, Meetings, and other forums either by advising them or attending a meeting with them.
- A staff member;
- A Relative, Carer or Family member;
- An external person, such as; a solicitor or professional independent person;
- An external agency who provide Advocacy Services.
